ASSESS YOUR SPACE

Deciding on the layout of your bedroom furniture is an essential step in bedroom design. Assess the area and think about what is really going to work.
One of the first things to think about is the size and height of your room. Consider the shape, light levels, and any features that need to be carefully thought out when you come to fill it with furniture.

CONSIDER YOUR LIGHT SOURCE

Lighting is a key to any room, but it is especially important when creating an attractive and comfortable atmosphere like a bedroom.
Identify where the natural light is coming from: is it a large window? While natural light is essential when designing a bedroom, most of us will spend more time in bed when it is dark.
Therefore, maximising the potential of artificial lighting in addition to natural light is crucial to creating a cosy and tranquil space. Think soft, diffused light from dimmable bedside lamps or wall lights, or even a string of fairy lights arranged along your headboard.
THINK ABOUT STORAGE

Bedroom storage options should be easy on the eye as well as functional. The bedroom should be a restful place, so adequate storage should be utilised to keep clutter at bay.
Stylish floor-to-ceiling storage will help make your room feel refined. Giving you space for clothes and the not-so-attractive things you want to hide away!
Consider mixing and matching your bedroom storage, especially if you have a lot of stuff that needs sorting and tidying. With less clutter on show, your bedroom will feel bigger and calmer.
SIZE UP YOUR BED

Choosing a bed isn't just about buying a beautiful bed frame - size is also a significant factor to consider! Do you really need a king-sized bed frame, or could you save space with a double bed instead?
Start with the position of your bed and organise all your furniture around it. It's best to position your bed lengthways in a rectangular room - if you are blessed with ample space, a large bedroom will allow for more creativity.
If you have a smaller room, pushing your bed into the corner of the room will free up more space.
WINDOW TREATMENTS

When it comes to choosing window treatments for a room, the possibilities are infinite. The treatment you decide on will either MAKE or BREAK your design though, a good investment in the bedroom is blinds and curtains.
If your windows are old and draughty, layering curtains over blinds will help keep the warmth in and make them more bespoke and distinguished.
Or perhaps you prefer natural light to wake up to in the morning, in which case voile, sheer curtains allow the light to gently filter in. They manage to look romantic, open, and airy while also being grounded and adaptable.
STYLE IT WITH TEXTILES

This is the most fun part of designing your bedroom and is worth taking your time over. The bed is the focal point in the bedroom, so swapping cushions and bed linen can be an effective change you can make.
The key is to experiment with a mix of textures and fabrics. For example, couple luxurious velvet and light linen in a bedroom for a chic aesthetic.
Another way to introduce texture and colour into the bedroom is with a rug. A Persian or Oriental rug can have a tremendous impact and is a great place to get creative with patterns. Plus, who doesn’t want to wake up to something soft under their feet?
A rug pulls a room together, and don’t be afraid to layer a few to give the space a collected and relaxed feel. Think about adding a thick shag or an eye-catching vintage kilim. Happy decorating!
