Ahh, 2020. We wish we could say that we were sad to see you go, but we know we aren’t the only ones looking forward to a better, brighter 2021—quite literally, when it comes to design. The year 2020 brought countless unexpected challenges that have fundamentally changed how we live in our homes. Most of us spent months sheltering in place; our living rooms transformed from a refuge into multifunctional spaces that emphasised work, education, entertainment, and hospitality. On the upside, it has forced homeowners to reflect, dissect, and evaluate how they live in their homes. Many of us have asked ourselves; how does home makes us feel, and how, ultimately, do we want to change and improve our relationship with home.

We're stepping into 2021 with renewed energy and a deeper appreciation for the roles our homes play in our daily lives. From neutral hues to natural materials, we asked designers, makers, and trendsetters what they expect to see all over the place in 2021. We’re foreseeing fresh ideas, fearless colours and textures, unexpected materials, indoor plants, and many more broad trends this year. If you're a design buff, keep clicking to learn what can be expected from the world of design, we’ve rounded them up with some insights from designers, makers, and experts in the field. Ready for a peek at what the new year has to bring? Read on.

THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL HOME

Home has become all things to all people in it. The role of the home has evolved and adapted drastically—not only do we live in our homes, but we now also work, exercise, and even holiday in them. No longer is the home a sacred space where one simply relaxes and unwinds - now a home must work in a multifunctional way, allowing our whole life to take place within its four walls. With spaces having to take on dual, even triple functionality, multifunctional design is more important every day.

Cleverly designed and placed furniture is imperative as home entertaining continues to be increasingly popular in 2021. Our homes are required to feel warm and welcoming as well as functional - Having a kitchen that doubles as a beautiful space to entertain family and friends is certainly a key requirement now.  This means having an office chair that is both comfortable enough for long days but aesthetically pleasing enough that it could double as a dining chair. Because most people are spending more time at home and needing a flexible, adaptable space, working frequently with multifunctional furniture and a variety of materials, from rich fabrics to mirrors and textured metals is a great way to incorporate functionality and style.

We have always been advocates of shopping local, small, and vintage. But we know there is more work to be done to be conscious consumers, better global citizens, and eco-friendly decorators. 2021 interior design trends will determine a new age in developing sustainable design pieces. As society begins to care more about where the things they own come from, who made them, and what impact have they left on the planet, companies that prioritise ethical and sustainable practices from sourcing to shipment are finally getting the spotlight they deserve. And that will only grow in 2021. More and more brands are innovating new materials, production, and design methods for a holistic approach that benefits the makers, designers, consumers, and planet Earth. From textiles to furnishings: many home decor products are getting the "slow" treatment, as we have begun to see in fashion for the last few years. We really hope the interior design world evolves in this way and diversifies - permanently.

In keeping with sustainability and craftsmanship, we pride ourselves on ethical and sustainable production of rugs - working closely with communities of traditional craftspeople across Iran and have done for over 30 years. We have selected three Persian rugs from our Eco, Overdyed and Vintage rug collections. See below.

GOING AU NATUREL

Natural elements have been creeping into interiors for years now, and that interior design trend will remain through 2021 at least. We are looking at a world that has been turned upside down and desires nothing more than to escape into places full of green, fresh air, and natural beauty. Biophilic design began as a way to bring the outdoors in: this trend is most commonly seen through using natural elements such as woods, grasses, woven wickers, stone, earth tones, and plants or images of plants and other natural scenery. Rattan and caned furniture have skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years;  the use of intrinsic materials continues to be an anchor of many brands' new collections. In fact, research suggests a strong link between natural elements and mental health - and following the year of COVID, this connection becomes even more essential.

So, how can we incorporate these elements of nature back into our lives? The most obvious way is through plants; you can also use other elements found in nature in your decoration: stone, wood, seashells, or straw. Natural materials create a more layered space, they also welcome the outdoors inside and are perfect accents for houseplants. Stick to a similar colour palette as the interior while layering patterns, colours, and materials to create a setting that is personal to you and your style. Contact with nature is indispensable and has become increasingly distant in our daily lives living in big cities. We have lost our connection with heaven, earth, water, and all the elements we find outdoors that make us feel fresh, relaxed, and one with the earth.

INDUSTRIAL AESTHETIC

After Pantone announced their colour of the yearUltimate Grey’, Industrial styling may be the next big trend in 2021. The industrial style became popular in the late 2000s with weathered wood, concrete, and metallic lighting fixtures. There’s something about industrial details that wouldn’t go away: the charm of uncompleted interiors, the raw finishes, and the appeal of a design age that centres on mechanical ingenuity. Incorporating industrial interiors into your home has a certain oomph to it. It’s an impressive way to combine modern design with age-old materials that look as cool as ever: used in loft apartments, modern homes, and commercial spaces globally, industrial design showcases neutral tones, utilitarian objects, and wood and metal surfaces.

Raw and industrial, the slick styling inside these home interiors feels anything but utilitarian. Concrete and cool, these grey modern style interiors are full of edgy ideas that sell the city lifestyle. Many design enthusiasts who celebrate upscale interiors now incorporate industrial style into their homes through features such as stainless steel surfaces, metal light fixtures, vintage furniture and statement rugs. It’s about proudly displaying the building materials that many try to conceal. Exposed brick walls and bare concrete planes translate into these high-end decor schemes as deep texture, rather than coarse or cold. And the result: a “warehouse look” that combines a true industrial feel with a range of other styles, from earthy to polished. We predict his fuss-free style may be a rising trend in 2021 as people continue to spend more time at home.
