The history of needlepoint goes back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians who used small diagonal stitches to sew together the canvas for their tents. The same diagonal stitch is now known as the “tent stitch” and is one of the most popular needlepoint stitches today. By the early 19th century it became a popular weave in England and America, and then spread throughout Europe, eventually reaching China, where they are made to a good standard today. Do note that Needlepoint's are flatweave rugs - they have no pile. Do get in touch if you would like to add an underlay to your order, as these tapestry style rugs are thinner than most. Similar in texture to Aubusson Rugs.
