In recent years, a new trend emerged in the rug industry that has seen older rugs given a make-over to complement the modern home. Cue the distressed rug. This style has taken the world by storm, and it’s about to get even hotter.

From traditional to transitional, distressed rugs offer the perfect finishing touch to any space. This new look celebrates textiles that are faded, worn, and softened over time; rugs that nestle into homes as if they’ve always been there. They demonstrate a fresh, exquisite, and timeless appeal.

With the increased demand for environmentally-friendly products, designers have found a push towards artisanal craftsmanship and ways of reusing and upcycling what we already have, especially in the home decor and interior design spaces.

Our goal is to bring a modern twist to the traditional look and feel of timeless rugs. Not only do they give a new lease of life to an aged carpet - but they add a vibrant splash of colour into our lives - while still exuding the timeless class of an original handcrafted piece of art.

In stunning muted colour schemes and subtle patterning running throughout, Persian distressed rugs capture the attention and create the impression of a well-loved piece passed down through the years. Beautiful, fashionable, sustainable, handmade and eco-friendly.

Whether you choose a distressed rug because you want the perfect rug to accompany your home decor or you need a change from cold and bare floors, let us introduce you to the latest trend that completely changes the look and feel of a room, better known as a distressed rug.

HOW ARE DISTRESSED RUGS MADE?

The distressing method starts with shearing a vintage Persian or Oriental rug to thin out the pile. The shearing reduces the carpet’s thickness and allows it to absorb more colour - which becomes muted by the end of the process.

The rug is then washed and bleached to strip it of any odours, blemishes, and stains, giving the rug artist an expansive canvas. The artist dyes specific parts of the rug until the right shade and intensity are attained. Only the surface of the fabric is affected, preserving the carpet for years to come.

Depending on the desired look, some rugs are laid under the sun after dying to achieve more muted hues. They are washed and dried to set the dye; the shades will be unique while maintaining their original geometric or floral pattern.

Do not mistake our rugs for manufactured distressed rugs. These rugs are often replicated with synthetic fibres made to look vintage or distressed by a machine. These rugs are not the same quality as handmade rugs.

Introduce vintage touches to your home with a distressed rug. A distressed rug is a timeless, beautiful home decor piece that has become popular over recent years for the luxury charm that brings sophistication to your floors. Nothing beats their vintage, elegantly faded look that holds up wonderfully to everyday use.

In addition to being beautiful, they are also handmade, sustainable, and have an innovative way of adding character and depth to your decor, making them a must-have for every home in every season. Use them to soften contemporary decor or give classically-influenced room settings a consistent feel.

A distressed rug is a signature element of the sustainable design movement - effectively bringing warmth to modern spaces and juxtaposing the old and new. Designed to last a lifetime, purchasing a distressed rug helps preserve traditional textiles and craftsmanship for the future generation.

As well as showcasing our Distressed Rug Collection at the famous Decorex Design Event in London this week, we have selected some of our favourite rugs for this blog below.
