This is a Persian Nain rug. Nain is a town 150km to the east of Isfahan in central Iran. Very fine and precise designs were created due to the high quality of the workshops in the area. Nain rugs have a cotton foundation with a very soft wool or wool & silk pule. The workmanship is of the highest class and the knot density is also high (often more than one million knots per square meter).
Patterns with a medallion in the middle together with arabesques and floral motifs are common.
Nain rugs have three knot types: 4La, 6La and 9La. In Farsi, the ""La"" translates to ""Layer"". This numbering helps decide the quality of a Nain rug - referring to the number of layers of threads that have been used in every warp-thread when weaving the rug. The lower the number the finer and higher density the knots the carpet has.

Tabriz rugs are from the city of Tabriz, the capital city of East Azarbaijan Province in the north west of Iran. It is one of the oldest weaving areas and makes a diverse collection of hand-knotted rugs. They are made with a good quality, fine, soft wool.
The term 'Raj' refers to the number of knots in a 70mm span. The higher the 'Raj', the more knots per m2, which is a higher quality of rug. They take longer to weave and more skill to get the design as intricate as they are.
