Wall-to-wall carpet isn’t as popular as it used to be. However, area rugs are a major turning point on how a room appears and feels (particularly in the living room). They add an incredible amount of warmth, colour and definition, meeting your room in harmony, or they can make a statement by adding an element of surprise, and we love surprises!

If you are craving something cosy for your home, do not overlook plain rugs in your search. Plain doesn’t have to be boring! Instead, embrace minimalist themes which work well in a variety of spaces, and you have a number of options to choose from when considering a solid colour for your rug.

Being the foundation for all of the other furniture, area rugs can also take what would otherwise be a lovely room and throw it into visual disarray. They also help make a room appear larger and can unify a room without being the focal point. So how do you choose the right rug for your space? Here are a few ideas from us at Lilla Rugs, so take a look and see if these sound more your cup of tea!

Add Some Colour

Plain coloured rugs are an attractive choice when you want to add a splash of colour to a room. Keep in mind that the colour will appear more intense when you see it in a large area, so make sure the colour you are considering suits the décor and isn’t too overwhelming for your room.  Neutral colours are flexible and can be a gentle way to soothe an eclectic room. Hence, better value for money as you won't need to purchase a new one in any future redecoration. If you are using lighter tones for the rest of the space, you may feel a bit bolder about your choice. Opt for a dark or bright coloured plain rug on the floor to add some warmth to the space.

If you decide to purchase a plain rug, ensure you choose the correct shade concerning the traffic – high traffic areas should avoid the use of light coloured rugs whereas dark ones hide dirt best.

Block Coloured Rugs

Deciding between a plain or patterned rug? If you want comfort underfoot or you're tying together colours in a room, try a plain rug. Many of our customers ask us; "Does plain add up to boring", the answer is "No". In fact, a plain rug would suit patterned furniture better, as it will minimise overcrowding. The absence of pattern in a plain rug actually highlights a colour scheme within a room and makes it pleasing to the eye. However, make sure not to go overboard on one colour, it makes a space lack depth and texture.

If you are thinking about a floor covering for a room that has a casual decorating theme, why not consider a solid coloured rug that has a pattern indented into the pile itself. This is a perfect way to add some interest to your floor without introducing multiple colours into your decorating scheme.

Here are some of our top picks for solid coloured rugs:
