One Rug, Styled Four Ways
Rugs are one of the most versatile additions to a home. This is so exciting for us at Lilla Rugs, but of course can be quite overwhelming for many of you. Will the rug look best in front of the sofa? Should it go under my sofa? How much longer should the rug be than the sofa? The questions go on.
We’re always here to answer these questions for you, and help you find the best way to style your rug in your home.
Here is an example of four different ways you can place one single rug, in a living room:
1. In front of your sofa
This often works well if the rug you fall in love with is not large enough to go under the sofa, or if you simply don’t want to cover or break up the design of the rug. We find that those that opt for a Persian silk rug, chose to place it in front of the sofa, with no additional furniture on top. The focus of the room is the rug in this case.
2. Front legs of the sofa, over the rug
This is often the choice we go for at Lilla Rugs. Always ensure the sofa is centered on the rug. This helps create a cohesive look in the room. You will also need to ensure the size of the rug is suitable for this approach. Remember you should always have a Spill over either side of the primary sofa (min 20cm/7 inches). Check out our size and fitting guide to get a better idea on what size of rug you need for your space.
3. Front legs of the sofa over the rug and a coffee table on top
The addition of the coffee table creates a focal point and anchors the furniture in the space. Everything else is the same as option 2.
4. The whole sofa on top of the rug
If you have the right space for it, you can opt to put the whole rug under your sofa. This works well in a large room, to help create a functional zone, particularly if it is an open plan space. It also works well to put the sofa completely over the rug, and then have an arm chair that has front legs only on top of the rug. Be sure to follow our tips on the size and fitting guide on this one. Particularly ensuring that there is enough of a gap from the rug to to wall. View the guide here.
Ultimately, the decision of where to place the rug is up to personal preference. Experiment with different placements and see what looks and feels best in your space.
