A Christmas Day Special: How To Protect Your Rugs

A very Merry Christmas to all of you today! Whether you were woken up by excited kids early this morning, or you've enjoyed a nice leisurely start to the day, we hope the rest of your day continues to be a magical one.

Sometimes we have clients start to panic about their wonderful handmade rugs on big days like today. Will our guests be careful with food and drinks around them? Will our kids spill their new paint set all over it? Will it get too dusty with all the footfall we're expecting today? Read on for our little guide on how best to protect your handmade rugs over the festive period and beyond.

1. Your Regular Clean

If you're expecting guests, you may think there is little point in doing your regular clean before they arrive. We recommend you do! Get that hoover out, put it on the low setting, and give it a good clean. Dust and dirt particles could be sitting on top, and if you have lots of people about to stand on and off the rug, it will push these particles further into the pile. If they get too much build up, you could risk a gradual wear down of the fibres of your handmade rug. Top tips:
  • Ensure that the vacuum cleaner's beater bar is turned off to prevent damage to the delicate fibers.
  • Rotate the rug periodically to distribute wear evenly across its surface.

2. Use an Underlay

Place a high-quality rug underlay/pad beneath your handmade rug to provide additional support and prevent slipping. Underlay also acts as a barrier between the rug and the floor, reducing the risk of abrasion and damage to the fibres.

3. Act FAST for spills and stains

Act promptly when spills occur. Blot the stain with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing the stain, as it may push the spill deeper into the fibres. Use a a little washing up liquid and warm water to then dab/ blot the spill further.

If you think there is still a stain remaining after these little tricks, reach out for a professional hand clean. It is always worth it!

4.  Roll and Store:

If it is simply giving you too much anxiety to leave your handmade rugs out during a busy time, or if you are having a party, we would recommend rolling the rug and storing it for the time being. Tips for storage:

  • Roll it tightly with the pile facing inward to protect against dust
  • Use a breathable fabric to wrap the rolled rug and store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid basements or attics with extreme temperature variations.

By incorporating these practices into your rug care routine, you can safeguard the beauty and value of your handmade rug during this busy season. However, do remember that handmade rugs are made from natural fibres which are incredibly hardwearing. They can withstand more than you think! So enjoy them and show them off to your guests.
