5 Rugs Under £500

It can be tricky to find stylish rugs to introduce into your home that don’t blow the budget. So many of us put off buying rugs because they can eat up a large chunk of your savings for a room makeover, or we often see people leaving rugs until last and just not having much budget left for them. I wanted to set a lower price point for the rugs in this post, to show you that you don't always need a huge amount to choose something sustainable and timeless for your home.

Rugs are so important to finishing your home, especially if you have wooden floors like most of us do. Rugs can help create a foundation in a room from which you can build up your colour scheme. They ground a space and make it feel cosy and inviting. Choosing a rug is all about texture – yes, there’s cosy wool designs and lighter cotton ones, but there is also some more unique styles to consider.

Today I have carefully selected FIVE beautiful Persian and Oriental rugs that pair perfectly with a variety of different style homes.

A rug ties various pieces of furniture together, and helps focus the eye on one spot in the room, so the space feels designed with thought and intention. Of course, each room is individual, but it’s usually best to get a slightly larger rug than you think you need; a smaller one will look lost in the middle of the room.

If it’s not in a hallway or in a kitchen, I like to place rugs under the furniture - so it feels like an integral part of the space and layout. I recently shared a post on rug placement for your living areas, giving you the best tips on how to get the right rug for your space.

If you're on the hunt for the perfect rug - but working with a tighter budget, have no fear! Today I have rounded up the best rugs you'll want to show off. They are all under £500.

1. CADEN Kilim Runner £250

Kilim's are a great option if you are on a budget. They are full of character and brilliant quality. The only reason they are at the lower price point is because they are flat weaves. This means they have no pile, so simply take far less time to make. They are popular in kitchen and dining areas, as they are lightweight and easy to shake out and keep clean.

2. NADIA Senneh £500

In the western part of Persia the province of Kurdistan is situated. Its capital today is Sanandaj, but in carpet context the older name is still used, Senneh. Rugs from the city of Senneh are super elegant, with a fine design and intricate patterns. They use such beautiful colours, and I find they work in a wide variety of rooms.

3. NESSA Natural Sheepskin - £300

This is a genuine 100% sheepskin, originating from Brazil. This sheepskin is untouched, and therefore has natural differences in colour throughout, adding extra character. They are a great lower cost option to the Moroccan Berber rugs, as they too have a thick and cosy pile, and are neutral in design and colour.

4. VALDEZ Bidjar - £250

Persian Bidjar are mainly woven by the Kurds in Gerus and Afsha areas in Iran. Bidjar rugs are pretty unique as they use two wefts instead of one, making the rug relatively heavy and extremely durable. They are known as the 'king of carpets'. If you stick to a smaller sized rug, you can even get something of this quality level! The geometric design makes them one of the more popular types of traditional Persian rugs.

5. UMI Koliai - £300

Koliai rugs are woven by the Kurds, renowned for their weaving skills. they are firmly tied with a high pile and a saturated colour scale. Koliai rugs often have large patters, geometrical figures and use of fairly subtle colours (something that we're all after at the moment). The workmanship is strong; the carpets are heavy and compact with good durability.

HELP! I need a larger rug. My little trick:

Go for a Jute rug in the size you need. This will frame the space and prevent your smaller rug from looking too small for your larger room. Then, place a Persian or Oriental rug on top of your Jute rug, at the price point that feels affordable for you. You will be adding the character and warmth of the handmade rug, whilst framing the room with the correct size. WIN WIN!

I hope that helped! Happy rug shopping.
