The Right Rug Size For Each Bed Size

Finding the perfect rug for your bedroom can add warmth, style, and comfort. However, choosing the right rug size to complement your bed is essential to create a balanced look. It's one that often gets customers of our quite confused, so here’s a detailed guide to help you pick the ideal rug size for your size of bed. Please note that these are UK bed sizes.

As a general rule, the rug width should always be longer than the bed. The rug will be placed with the bed width against length of rug, as will look more clear in the illustrations below.

1. Single Bed (90 x 190cm)

A single bed is perfect for kids’ rooms or smaller bedrooms, and it needs a rug that enhances the space without overwhelming it.

  • Rug Size Recommendation: 150x100cm or 180x120cm
  • Placement Tips:
    • Side placement: A rug beside the bed adds warmth underfoot when stepping out. This would put you on the smaller rug size and would be dependent on the amount of space you have next to the bed.
    • Under the bed: Place two-thirds of the rug under the bed with the rest exposed at the foot. This creates a soft landing while keeping the design balanced.

2. Small Double Bed/ Three Quarter Bed (120 x 190 cm)

A small double bed, also known as a queen or three-quarter bed, works well in compact spaces like guest rooms or teen bedrooms.

  • Rug Size Recommendation: 250x150cm
  • Placement Tips:
    • Side placement: You can place a long runner (e.g., 70x250 cm) along one side. This works well if you have the bed against a wall and therefore not enough overspill either side.
    • Under the bed: Opt for a larger rug ( 250x150cm) that extends beyond the sides and foot of the bed, creating symmetry and balance.

3. Double Bed (135 x 190 cm)

A double bed is a common choice for couples or single sleepers who want extra space. The rug should accommodate both the bed and bedside furniture.

  • Rug Size Recommendation: 250x150cm or 250x200cm
  • Placement Tips:
    • Under the bed: A 250x150cm rug works well if placed under two-thirds of the bed, allowing for around 60 cm of rug to show on each side. If you want the rug to come further up and more likely to be able to step out onto it when you get out of the bed, go for a  250x200cm for that extra width.
    • Entire bed coverage: A larger rug like 300x200cm can fit under the whole bed and extend beyond the sides and foot, making the room feel more spacious and luxurious. This size should be carefully measured, as it will be dependent on having adequate floor space in the room/ depends on the shape of your room and door frames.

4. King Size Bed (150 x 200 cm)

A king-size bed calls for a generously sized rug that complements its grandeur without overpowering the space.

  • Rug Size Recommendation: 300x200cm or 300x250cm
  • Placement Tips:
    • Under the bed: Ideally, a rug that is 300x200cm will cover two-thirds of the bed’s length, extending beyond the sides and foot for a cosy look.
    • Full coverage: A 300x250cm  rug offers a luxurious feel and can cover the area around the entire bed, leaving enough room for bedside tables to not be on top of the rug.

5. Queen Size Bed (160 x 200cm)

A Queen-size bed is very similar to a king sized bed, and not often a size in the UK. It is slightly wider than a King, so the rug sizing is very similar, but for full coverage you can go up a size to 350x250cm.

  • Rug Size Recommendation:  300x250cm or  350x250cm
  • Placement Tips:
    • Under the bed:    300x250cm placed under two-thirds of the bed, allowing for around 80 cm of rug to show on each side.
    • Entire bed coverage: A larger rug like  350x250cm can fit under the whole bed and extend beyond the sides and foot, making the room feel more spacious.

6. Super King Bed (180 x 200 cm)

Super king beds offer plenty of space for two sleepers and need a rug that complements their size and scale. A rug that is too small underneath a super king will be very lost.

  • Rug Size Recommendation: 350x250cm or 365x275cm
  • Placement Tips:
    • Under the bed: A 350x250cm rug will cover most of the space around the bed, leaving an elegant frame of rug around the bed.
    • Complete room coverage: If your room is particularly large, consider a 400x300cm rug to make the entire bed and surrounding furniture feel unified. This works especially well in master bedrooms.
    • Emperor Bed (200cm x 200cm) - would be the same guide as a super king, with some extra space to go up to 50cm bigger on either side, if the room allows (look at  400x300cm)

General Tips for Rug Placement

  1. Proportions Matter: Make sure the rug size is proportional to the size of the bed and room. A rug that’s too small will look out of place, while one that’s too big can overwhelm the room.

  2. Rug Under Furniture: Ideally, two-thirds of the rug should be placed under the bed, allowing the rest to extend at the foot. This ensures you have a soft surface to walk on when getting out of bed.

  3. Bedside Tables: If you want the rug to go under bedside tables, opt for a larger rug so that it frames the bed and tables equally. This is usually not what we go for when fitting a rug, but it can work in certain spaces.

  4. Leave Space: If your rug is large enough to cover the entire room, leave about 20 cm between the edge of the rug and the walls to create a framed effect and avoid making the room feel cramped. Also be careful to look out for door frames, wall shapes, furniture out the end of the bed, or anything else that will impact the size of the rug you should opt for.

Choosing the right rug size for your bed can make all the difference in your bedroom’s design. From small single beds to super kings, selecting the right rug size will be key to achieving a balanced look. Try not to get caught up in what you're 'losing' of the rug under the bed, as it's exactly that that offers the harmony.

By following these guidelines, you'll have a cosy, well-proportioned bedroom that is both functional and stylish. Happy decorating!
