It's a new year, a new you, or even better a new home! This year, your New Year's Eve, like all of the 2020 holidays, will likely look different. You might be spending the evening watching New Year's movies at home with your family rather than going out for a glitzy night on the town. It's been an arduous year for all of us, so there’s no better way to start your personal New Year’s resolutions than with the home. Not only are you spending a lot of time at home - which means it’s likely top of your mind all day - but it’s a direct representation of you. When the champagne bottles are empty and the year has officially tallied one more number, we’re suddenly left with a year ahead of us–a year of infinite possibilities.

One way you can celebrate the passing of the whirlwind that's been this last year and celebrate what's to come is to write out a few new goals for 2021. Choosing a New Year’s Resolution for yourself should be intuitive and natural. It doesn’t have to be a chore or something that takes hours of deliberation (although you can if you want to). So let’s celebrate 2021 with some positivity, high hopes, and the desire to make the world a better place! Why not start with your home? When your home is decorated, organised, and cleaned to your liking, it might feel like all other facets of your life fall into place. What follows is a list of resolutions that can work within your busy lifestyle, create more freedom, stimulate creativity, and ultimately cultivate a connection with those you love and the community around you. As they say, an organised and happy home is an organised and happy mind.

SEE YOU LATER CLUTTER

If you want to start 2021 with a fresh slate, double down on your clutter. There is no better way to start the year than to have that all important and probably much needed post-Christmas declutter! Clutter tends to leave people feeling jaded and unorganised: By sprucing up every corner in the house, one can revel in a fresh perspective when the new year kicks in.

We’re all spending lots of time at home, so why shouldn’t everything you interact with daily add to your life in some way. Often there’s a temptation to hold onto things that were once loved. But as your tastes evolve or your needs for your home change, give yourself permission to edit items out if they no longer thrill you. Then the pieces you love can really shine; you will feel lighter, happier, and more productive in your space. Trust me, you will be heading into 2021 strong if this is the only one you manage to tackle in full.

ADOPT A HOUSEPLANT

Looking for an easy New Year’s Resolution idea this year? If you don’t consider yourself a green thumb, why not commit to buying at least one house plant in 2021. If you don’t kill it, you may discover that you actually like tending to plants. It’s almost impossible to list all the well-known benefits of houseplants—from adding beauty to your home to boosting oxygen and moisture levels in the air and lowering anxiety and depression. Filling your home with plants can be a great way to perk up any room in your home.

No relationship (or plant) can grow without a little quality time though, right? Make it a priority to spend at least five minutes a day caring for them. Whether you use the time to clean them, feel the soil, or just water them, you and your houseplants both will benefit from this dedicated time. Plus, they’re easy to care for because they only need a little water and sunlight! After you become more comfortable with indoor plants, you may decide to start growing perennials, shrubs, and other plants in your garden.

CUT BACK ON DISPOSABLES

You know what I’m talking about. Disposable items we use once or twice and then toss into the bin to be taken off to a landfill. It’s no secret that we have a problem with pollution. Mindful living and protecting our planet go hand in hand. Not only is it better for your health, your wallet, and the environment, reducing your disposables helps you teach your kids good practices. In 2021 we are recommitting our efforts to ensure the world neither needs, wants, or uses single-use ANYTHING - and that includes coffee cups! When shopping, check out the bulk bins in the supermarkets where you’ll find everything from rice, lentils, and flour to cereal, tea, herbs, spices — even sweets. And for things like crisps and cookies, instead of single-serving packages, buy one bigger package instead. Bulk purchases ultimately create less waste. Opting for reusable items and cutting down on the overall number of everyday items you need to dispose of is key to saving our planet.

SUSTAINABLE STYLE

Want to make your home a brighter, greener space in 2021? Consider putting sustainability at the centre of your home décor. Much like fast fashion, it is time to be more conscious about your homeware purchases. Stop falling into the high street trap of what is 'hot right now', but will not be so hot in a few months. It's time to think about what is going to last in your home and also who you want to support - Plan on investing in your home in ways that truly better the way your family lives: embrace healthier living by using natural, ethical materials, like wool, linen, and cotton. We have a beautiful selection of Persian Over-dyed rugs that are both eco-conscious and ethically made. By hunting down more unique, statement pieces you'll be preserving artisanal tradition and craft. This is a point very dear to our hearts and something Lilla Rugs strives to support each and every day.
