Kashan is one of the oldest cities in Iran. It is located in the centre of the country - in the Isfahan province. Stunning Kashan rugs have been crafted here since the 17th Century, during the Safavid dynasty. Kashan has beautiful architecture and the city is renowned for it's wonderful holiday homes. The rugs are among the most famous of all Persian rugs, and tend to be what most people think of when they hear the term 'Persian rug'. They are characterised by their central medallion on a red field, with a navy/ ivory border. They of course come in other designs, like this stunning large all-over print.
The word "Kork" refers to the special kind of wool used in this rug. The Persian word "Kork" means "soft down". This expression is used for particularly fine and soft wool for very high quality rugs.
