Soumak is a comparatively rare tyle of Kilim rug. The name comes from the old town of 'Shemakja'. Soumak is a type of flat weave, but is much stronger and thicker than the common Kilim. It has a smooth front face and ragged back - whereas a Kilim is the same on both sides. It is still flat woven in style.
